  About data ranges

A data range is a way of describing a list on your spreadsheet.

Excel knows that any list will have column headings and rows.  It understands column headings as data fields.  It understands each row as a data record.

When you use data-oriented commands such as Data | Sort, Excel will look for a data range that represents your list.
