  Excel Menus

The menu bar organizes lists of commands that you can use to control Excel.  The most frequently used commands are listed first, beginning from the left (file commands) and moving to the right.

You can select menus with the mouse, but note also that each menu choice has one letter underlined. If you press the ALT key and that option's letter, the selected menu will drop down and you can choose its options without the mouse (again, via pressing an appropriate letter key). At times this is much faster than reaching for the mouse to point and click.

For example, ALT + F opens the File menu.

Note also that when shortcut keys are available, they are listed in the menu. For example, CTRL+S (pressing the Ctrl key and holding down the "s" key at the same time) saves the file.  Because the shortcut keys are listed in the menu, there is no need to memorize them. You will find yourself using shortcut keys to speed up your work quite naturally if you remember to read the menus as you use them.

The File Save command is an important one to remember: save your work early and often -- usually as soon as you have created something you don't want to lose.
