  How graphs use ranges

When you are building a graph, you will often be using a spreadsheet table with column headings and row captions.  If you build a line graph, Excel will default to
  • using the column headings for the category (x) axis -- that's the horizontal one
  • using the numbers in the table to define the value (Y) axis -- that's the vertical one
  • using each row of numbers as a separate line (Excel calls each line a data series), with the row captions becoming the entries in the chart's legend.
