Case Publishing
Case authors often lack the affiliation with an institution that has a publishing arrangement with case publishers. We at CMI believe that every case should see the light of day and be widely available to other educators. To this end, CMI has established a relationship with the European Case Clearing House (ecch) to distribute any case as long as it has been tested in a classroom and the author believes that it meets his or her own standards of quality.
The Case Method Institute Case Collection thus frees individual authors and institutions in North America to publish cases and have them distributed globally. Authors receive 70% of all royalties earned in excess of $30 each year, paid annually. CMI receives the balance in order to cover administrative and marketing costs. Should we need to change this arrangement, authors are free to withdraw from the program at any time. There is no cost to the author for publishing a case, since ecch does all the preparatory work prior to distribution.
Institutional Recognition - At CMI, we believe that the ultimate test of quality is the marketplace. For that reason, we do not vet any cases prior to submission. The top selling cases in up to nine management categories plus one overall winning case for each year, however, will be awarded a “CMI Case of the Year Award.” These awards recognize the authors and institutions of cases that have achieved the highest growth in popularity worldwide. CMI measures 'popularity' by reference to the number of institutions that have adopted a case for the classroom. It is a quantitative and objective assessment, which avoids subjective opinion.
All CMI-registered cases authored or co-authored in North America are considered for the awards. The objective is to provide formal recognition and exposure for successful case authors and their institutions. The recipients will be sent notification and certificates celebrating this recognition. The awards will be noted on the ecch web case database and on the cover of each case. Winners will be noted on the CMI page on the ecch web site. Ecch also produces a booklet featuring the top 100 ecch cases which will include the CMI winners if they qualify.
When your case is registered, bibliographical details will be entered into the ecch on-line case search database and an inspection copy posted for potential users to preview. The case is then listed in the following month's e-mail update service to several thousand subscribers and included in the next issue of the Case Collections Update, mailed to in excess of 21,000 recipients worldwide. It will also be listed in the next issue of the quarterly bibliography New Cases in Management.
Copyright
You retain complete copyright to the case. You are simply licensing the case to CMI for publication of custom cases through ecch and its affiliates around the world. There are no restrictions about your publishing the case elsewhere, using it or selling it yourself, or including it in a textbook. This simple arrangement is designed to allow you to get your case into circulation! Should you ever want to withdraw or update your case, you are free to do so at any time.
