Arctic Economics

Welcome to Arctic Economics

This website is related to an examination of the effect of seasonality on the economics and human activity in the Arctic.  We will initially be focusing on transportation mechanisms in the Arctic, such as winter roads and ice roads.  Our initial focus will be on the Yellowknife area of the Northwest Territories in Canada.  We will initially focus on the winter roads created by the Department of Transportation of the Government of the Northwest Territories, as well as the Joint Venture Tibbett to Contwoyto Winter Road, which goes from outside Yellowknife north up to three diamond mines, the Diavik Diamond Mine (owned by Rio Tinto), the Ekati Diamond Mine (owned by BHP Billiton) and the Snap Lake Mine (owned by De Beers Canada).  This project is funded by the U.S. National Science Foundation, and is described here
