About Shankar

I am a faculty member in Babson College. I currently serve as the Director of the Honors Program in Babson and I hold the William F. Glavin Honors Chair. I am a Professor of Information Technology Management. I have been in Babson College since summer 2009. Prior to that, I was a faculty member in Questrom School of Management, Boston University from 1998. I have multiple degrees including Masters in Industrial Engineering and in Computer Science that allows me to straddle information systems/technology and to a small extent in Operations Management.

Courses Designed and Delivered

  • Operations and Information Management (Graduate)

    • Covered the design, analysis and improvement of operating models along with the role of digital technologies and data in improving process efficiencies and redesign of processes.
  • Data Management (Graduate and Undergraduate)

    • Covered strategic aspects of data management including data warehousing, and data quality management as well as the conceptual, logical, and physical design of databases, Structured Query Language (DDL, DML, and DCL using Microsoft SQL Server, mySQL and Oracle), and data security in databases.
  • Agile Methods(Undergraduate)

    • Provides students with a comprehensive understanding of the agile methodology using SCRUM. The sprint execution is built into the course through experiential, hands-on exercises and a semester long live project.
  • Web Development(Undergraduate)

    • Covered basics of Web Design and developing web pages using HTML5, CSS3, and JS and jQuery.
  • Advanced Web Development (Undergraduate)

    • Combination of Website development and databases – connecting backend database with web pages using WAMP/MAMP stacks.
  • Analysis and Design of Information Systems (Graduate and Undergraduate)

    • Covered both structured and the rational unified approach for analyzing and designing systems and using Oracle Case tools or Sybase Power Designer for defining both analysis and design models.
  • Information Systems Foundations (Graduate and Undergraduate)

    • Covered basics (hardware/software, data management, data communications, system and application development, business process, and security/privacy and ethics) of information technology and information systems as well as enterprise systems including Supply Chain Management, Enterprise Resource Planning, and Customer Relationship Management.
  • Basic Operations Management (Undergraduate)

    • Covered fundatmental topics in operations such as inventory management, scheduling, capacity planning, MRP, supply chain, project management, production planning, plant layout/design, and total quality management.
  • Introductory Information Systems – as a Cross Functional Component (Undergraduate)

    • Covered the role and importance of IT/IS for a small business startup including strategic alignment of business and IT/IS, management of data, outsourcing/ASP models for systems planning, Search Engine Optimization, Search Engine Marketing, Costing of IT/IS, besides the basics of IT/IS. Taught in two different settings: (1) integrated with general management curriculum; (2) integrated with Marketing, Operations and Finance.
  • Building Tech-Savvy Entrepreneurs BootCamp (Undergraduate)

    • Highlighted the role of technology in entreprenuership and covered coding with Python. Five day intensive course with interactions with a panel of VCs and a panel of tech entreprenuers.) Purpose was to give students a quick and in-depth look at programming to gauge their own interest in coding and tech ventures
